My Gym of Brewer Gears Up for Healthy Weight Week

Children's fitness center keeps local children mindful of staying healthy and fit

Most of us probably think that health and fitness are the last things on children's minds, but actually, studies show that these issues are just as important to children as they are for adults. That is why My Gym of Brewer is keeping children in fitness-mode during Healthy Weight Week, January 20 – 26. Owner Karen Kohlmeyer says fun and fitness go hand in hand at the local center.

"Kids love to jump around, run and play. My Gym is a wonderful place where they can put all of that good energy to use," Kohlmeyer said. "In recognition of Healthy Weight Week this year, we are excited to stimulate children to live healthy lifestyles. We feel it is important to instill a healthy way of life at a young age."

Interestingly enough, research shows that parents are on the right track in educating their children about health and fitness. A recent article in MediaPost Publications noted that older children ("tweens") and parents are "on the same page" when it comes to knowing the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, according to BuzzBack Market Research for Disney Consumer Products.

Kids are becoming knowledgeable of the types of foods that are healthy and they are also beginning to understand the importance of physical activity. The study – which involved children ages nine to 11 and parents with children between these ages – showed that 80 percent of kids said they view their lifestyles as healthy and that they are physically fit. Eighty percent of the adults also were satisfied with their children's eating habits, mostly because they are able to control their children's food choices.

"Along with healthy eating, children should know that physical fitness should be a regular part of their lives," Kohlmeyer added. "At our center in Brewer, the children – even at a really young age – enjoy getting to know and control their bodies as our trained instructors facilitate their building relationships to physical activity. We make it fun. Our structured, age-appropriate weekly classes incorporate music, dance, relays, games, special rides, gymnastics, sports and other original activities. They have fun gaining strength, balance, coordination, fin and gross motor proficiency, agility, flexibility and even social skills. Most of all, we focus on building self- confidence and esteem."

My Gym, named the country’s #1 children’s fitness program by Entrepreneur Magazine in 2005 and 2006, creates programs and services catered to children from the ages of six weeks through six years old.  Its focus is to empower youngsters by helping them acquire the skills, confidence, and positive self-image that they need to become healthy young adults.  Since its founding in 1983, My Gym Children’s Fitness Center has been at the cutting edge of the children’s fitness industry.
