West Grand Lake Race August 3rd to benefit Downeast Lakes Land Trust

Grand Lake Stream, Maine:  Sunday, August 3rd will be the 4th annual West Grand Lake Race to benefit the Downeast Lakes Land Trust in Grand Lake Stream. This fun community event attracts kayakers and canoeists from throughout Washington County and beyond. Grand Lake Lodge hosts a cookout for all participants after the race.

The race includes options for competitive paddlers or relaxed family outings – including courses of 12, 6, or 4 miles. There’s even an award for the team that “enjoys the lake the longest”. All three courses start and finish in the village of Grand Lake Stream and are round trips around islands in West Grand Lake – paddlers will enjoy seeing some of the undeveloped shoreline of the land trust’s 27,000-acre Farm Cove Community Forest.

Registration is from 9 to 10:30 am at the boat landing at the west side of the Grand Lake Stream dam on Shaw Street in Grand Lake Stream. Registration forms and additional information are available at www.downeastlakes.org , or by calling (207)796-2100. Fees are $25 or $15 for ages 12 and under, and include registration, t-shirts, snacks, and a cookout.

About the Downeast Lakes Land Trust

In 2001 residents of interior Washington County formed the Downeast Lakes Land Trust to protect the unique natural resources and way of life of their region.  DLLT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Grand Lake Stream, with a mission to contribute to the long-term economic and environmental well-being of the Downeast Lakes region through the conservation and exemplary management of its forests and waters.  DLLT purchased its 27,080-acre Farm Cove Community Forest in 2005, and sustainably manages it for wildlife habitat, forest products, and public recreation, as described on its web site, www.downeastlakes.org.
